The folding bike: the secret weapon for your Romanian road trip
Renting a car in Bucharest or travelling in a campervan? Slide a folding or electric bike into the trunk and turn every parking spot into a launchpad for adventure. Authentic villages, Black Sea coast, Carpathian forests, medieval cities — on your own terms, without traffic.
Picture this: you land at Henri Coandă Airport (Otopeni), pick up your rental car from Hertz, Avis or any local agency, and start a two-week tour of Romania. You stop in Sibiu, Brașov or somewhere on the Danube riverbank — and suddenly realise that traffic, parking nightmares and infrequent buses are eating up all the golden hours. The fix? A folding bike quietly tucked in the boot, ready to ride in 30 seconds.
Why a folding bike — and not a regular one?
A folding bike with 16 or 20 inch wheels collapses in 20–30 seconds to the size of a medium suitcase (~80×60×35 cm). It slides into the boot of any car from segment B upward, sits in the living area of your campervan, or stands in a compartment — no roof rack, no bike carrier, no oversize permit. A regular bike cannot do any of that.
Our electric folding bikes add a silent hub motor that assists your pedalling on hills, extends your range without fatigue, and charges from any standard 220V socket in your campervan, campsite or guesthouse overnight.
What sets us apart from standard bike rental companies
Most bike rental shops have regular bicycles. Ours disappear into your car boot.
Folds in 30 seconds, fits anywhere
We use 16" or 20" wheels — not the 26–29" of a standard rental bike. That difference means it fits inside a Dacia Logan boot, not strapped to a roof rack or trailer. Weighs 11–16 kg; one person lifts it easily.
Made for campervans & caravans
Most campervan travellers have no practical way to carry a regular bike. Our folding bike stores in the wardrobe, under the bed or in the exterior luggage bay — no modifications to the vehicle required.
Electric AND foldable — a rare combination
Few rental companies offer bikes that are both electric and compact enough to store inside a vehicle. Ours do. The battery detaches in seconds and charges from any 220V outlet — including your van's hook-up or campsite power.
Enhances the holiday you already planned
It doesn't replace your car — it completes it. Park the car and explore by bike. Mountains, coast, village lanes or a medieval city centre. Every car park becomes a starting point for a real local experience.
4 ways a rental folding bike changes your Romania holiday
Real scenarios for tourists exploring Romania by rental car or campervan
Authentic Rural Romania
Village lanes have no pavement, no Uber, no tourist shuttle. On a bike you ride past rose-covered gates, apple orchards and farms where shepherds still graze flocks. The Transylvanian Saxon villages, Maramureș wooden churches and Moldavian monasteries are all a short pedal from wherever you park.
Black Sea Coast
Parking in Mamaia, Neptun or Vama Veche in July is a nightmare. Leave the car at your campsite or rental cottage and cycle freely along the seafront promenade, from restaurant to restaurant, to the quieter beach 2 km away. Catch the sunset on sand — not in traffic.
Carpathian Mountain Towns
Sinaia, Predeal, Bran, Rânca — beautiful mountain resorts but parking is always far from the action. A bike takes you along quiet forest tracks, past streams and mountain farms where no car can follow. The electric model is made for gentle climbs without overexertion.
Historic City Centres
Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, Brașov, Timișoara — the old centres are too congested to drive through and too big to cover fully on foot. A folding bike is the sweet spot: pull it from the boot, explore 15 km of boulevards, squares and museums, then pack it away and drive on. Zero paid central parking.
Flying into Otopeni? Pick up your bike when you pick up your car.
If you're landing at Henri Coandă Airport and renting a car from Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget or any local agency — add a CooChirie folding bike to your trip. We deliver to Otopeni or to your Bucharest hotel the same day. Campervan travellers: the bike stores in the living area and charges from the van's socket overnight.

Will a folding bike actually fit in my rental car boot?
Yes. Our folding bikes use 16–20 inch wheels and fold in about 30 seconds. The folded dimensions are roughly 80×60×35 cm — that fits in the boot of any car from segment B (Dacia Logan, VW Polo, etc.) upward. If you have a very small city car or want to be certain, message us the car model before booking and we'll confirm.
Can I pick up the bike directly at Otopeni Airport?
We don't have a fixed desk inside the terminal, but we deliver the same day anywhere in Otopeni and Bucharest. Morning arrival? The bike can be at your hotel or accommodation by afternoon. You can also collect in person from our Otopeni location — call +40 768 867 867 for the exact address and availability.
How much does it cost to rent a folding bike for a week or two?
Pricing depends on the model (classic or electric) and rental duration — the longer you rent, the lower the daily rate. Contact us at office@coochirie.ro or on WhatsApp for a personalised quote; we'll reply within minutes with the exact price and availability for your dates.
Can I charge an electric bike in a campervan or campsite?
Absolutely. The battery removes in seconds and charges from any standard 220V socket. Campervans, campsites and guesthouses all have standard outlets — a full charge takes 4–6 hours and gives you 40–70 km of range, more than enough for a full day of exploring.
What is the minimum rental period?
The minimum is 3 days for a vacation bike rental. Need it for a single event or day? Get in touch and we'll see what we can arrange. There's no maximum — many tourists rent for 2–3 weeks and cover the whole country. The longer you rent, the better the daily rate.
What happens if the bike breaks down during my trip?
All bikes are technically inspected before delivery. If a mechanical failure occurs through normal use (not your fault), we repair or replace at no cost to you. A puncture repair kit is included in every rental. If you're far from Bucharest, we're available on WhatsApp to guide you through any quick fix.
Can I rent multiple bikes for a family or group?
Of course. We also offer standard (non-folding) bikes if you have a larger group or a spacious SUV. For families with children we can suggest complementary equipment too. Message us on WhatsApp or at office@coochirie.ro with the number of bikes and dates — we'll put together a group offer.
